Gunmen last night assassinated Shaykh Muhammad Mumin Harun — a prominent Mogadishu cleric –on the outskirts of Mogadishu’s Hamar Jadid estate. The cleric was the imam of Abu Hureira mosque.
The assailants opened fire on the car in which the deceased and three other clerics were travelling after performing night prayers at the Abu Hureira mosque. The vehicle was riddled with bullets. Shaykh Harun died on the spot while the other three clerics were injured.
A Somali cleric based in Mogadishu, Shaykh Hasan Dahir Aweys, has strongly condemned the attack on the clerics.
Shaykh Aweys has sent condolences to the family of the deceased and said attacks on clerics and intellectuals have persisted in Mogadishu because residents have failed to apprehend criminals.
The deceased was one of the directors of Al-Marwasi Islamic institute which is situated in Mogadishu’s Gubta estate [passage omitted].
The director of CRD [Centre for Research and Dialogue] Abdiqadir Yahya and the adviser of Ifka Xalan Islamic court Hirsi Abdi Ilmi alias Hirsi Lugay, were killed in Mogadishu early this month.
