Malaysian soldiers serving as United Nations forces in Somalia will only enforce peace and not engage in combat, Defence Minister Najib Razak said Tuesday. Our mission is to enforce peace and not to engage in combat, he told reporters here.
Malaysia is sending 870 men to Somalia. Najib said the soldiers had been directed to use weapons as a last resort, and even then to the minimum.
The Malaysian soldiers will be among the troops from 18 countries despatched to the African country under the United Nations operation in Somalia (UNOSOM II). The advance detachment of 50 personnel left four days ago and was reported to have arrived in Mogadishu Monday.
