Referendum and Multiparty Elections Pledged

The government will hold multiparty elections in February 1991 in line with a pledge in 1989 to implement political reforms.

A referendum will take place on October 31st. This will be followed by parliamentary and local elections involving different political parties on February 1st 1991, Mogadishu radio said on July 16th.

The government is to appoint a committee to prepare a law governing the establishment of political parties and elections. “The government will, as a matter of urgency, appoint a committee to seek peace and reconciliation with opposition groups,” it said.
