French and Somali army stand off at Djibouti border

Paris Domestic Service radio (in French) 1200 GMT

[Excerpt] The situation remains tense this morning on the border between the French Territory of the Afars and Issas and Somalia. French and Soviet-made tanks are facing each other, and shots have apparently been fired.

The Somali press agency even asserts that soldiers supported by armored cars allegedly attacked a border town yesterday, without stating whether it was the Loyoda incident during which French soldiers killed the six terrorists and freed the children. The Somali agency adds that heavy losses in men and equipment were caused on the Somali side.

Four Air France planes, two Boeing 707’s and two 747’s, took off this morning from Orly and Roissy for Djibouti with 800-strong reinforcements on board.
