Two hundred people were arrested in Djibouti today when the French police searched the homes of people there. This follows the recent demonstrations for independence and the riots which broke out on Tuesday night and Wednesday. Police investigation centers have been set up in the streets of Djibouti following the clashes two nights ago and yesterday between young nationalists demanding their independence and the French police.
An announcement issued by the French governing council in Djibouti said that many people had been jailed, but the exact number was not stated. Nationalist freedom fighters of the Somali Coast were reported to have attacked 20 Amhara homes.
It is reliably reported that several hundred people–mainly women and children–have been forcibly ejected from the Somali Coast and dumped on this side of the border. Among them are said to be several seriously injured persons. The same reliable reports add that a ban is imposed in Djibouti on any gatherings and that private houses have been destroyed by tanks and armored cars.
