The delegate of the Somali territory held by Ethiopia was followed by the head of the Northern Frontier District delegation who in addressing the conference on behalf of the inhabitants of the NFD stated:

“Our nationalist struggle for independence from British rule in the NFD started historically in 1944 when a branch of the Somali Youth League was opened in the NFD.”

[Delegate goes on to relate the history of the nationalist movement under British rule in the NFD and events leading to London conference on Kenya–not recorded]

“We sent a delegation there (to the London conference) to present our political view that since Kenya was attaining independence, the inhabitants of the NFD were determined to secede from Kenya.”

“Today,” he said:

“…the NFD is one of the trouble spots of the world, inhabited by Muslims. Thousands of people are massacred or murdered with the support of the British troops and the RAF (Royal Air Force), Muslim women are raped and killed, and children are mercilessly murdered in the presence of their parents. Livestock are machine-gunned and bombed by planes given by British RAF”

He went on to say that the Muslim people are (word indistinct) prisons, police (inaudible passage). Today, holy places where Muslims worship in the NFD are being entered (words indistinct), and worshipper are chased, and Muslims are being forced even not to go to the mosque for prayers.

While Islam spreads its teaching (words, indistinct), other ways, the establishment of different churches are being undertaken in the country. “New churches”, he said “have been introduced in Marsabit, Moyale and Isiolo districts of the NFD, while on the other hand no Moslems are permitted to propagate the teaching of the religion among the Boran tribes in the country.”

We are now, he said, right in the (word indistinct) of this conference of the World Muslim Congress calling for the support for all Muslims of the world against the enemies of our political (word indistinct) and religious rights and against the (word indistinct) now taking place in the NFD, the majority of whom are Muslims and pray to God for help.
