Hargeisa Somalia Domestic Service in Somali 1645 GMT –(broadcast of anti-Ethiopian demonstrations in Hargeisa as the 1963 revolt in the Western Somaliland/Ogaden was ongoing)
The announcer introduced Ali Jadid Mohamed, Somali National Council Hargeisa branch secretary, who said:
We as Somalis are not five but one–of one country, one creed, and one race. We shall never agree to or accept the colonialist carving up of our land. We shall fight to the death against it. We have expelled white colonialism from the motherland, but we never expected an African state to colonize us, our land, and our people.
Therefore, as can be seen from the placards, we prove to our brothers, the ambassadors who have come from Mogadiscio–that is, the ambassadors of the UAR, Ghana, and Sudan–how we feel about African colonialism in our land and their massacre of our people with the use of tanks and aircraft. This is an injustice held in contempt by Africa, Asia, and Europe.
I add here that we shall also not accept the British desire to hand over our land and people to Kenya. More than 88, percent of the people want to unite with their brethren in the Somali Republic. We shall (resist the?) British attempt to hand over our brothers to Kenya, Tom Mboya, and Jomo Kenyatta. We warn our brother Africans and our elected representatives that if they do not do anything, we shall shed our blood and will not just sit back with folded arms.
I repeat that we are one and not five. We have been divided by the colonialists. We shall die to save our brothers and lands from other Africans. We tell you, brother Africans: If you believe in the spirit of the charter, then we want you to give us our God-granted right. We want you to recognize what we need. We want your support. We never thought that Africans would colonize us. But you can see with us that Africans are colonizing us. Our land, our people, and our creed are being liquidated.”
The next speaker was Kadhah Shaykh Mahamud, vice president of the Somali Democratic Union:
Our purpose in staging this demonstration is to show these African leaders who have come to Hargeisa that the Somalis are indivisible. We would all like Africa to unite, but this will never be possible as long as Africans are colonizing brother Africans. The Habashi are colonizing Somali land. The British are doing the same in the Northern Frontier District. The French are doing likewise in Djibouti. Until all Somalis are united, there can be no African ambassadors.
